Traveling to Capri is almost like escaping time itself, a place to immerse yourself in a magical mythical world. Poised between the blue of the sea and the sky, between cliffs of dazzling white and lush Mediterranean green, Capri is a gift of the gods: a soulful spot where aristocrats and artists, poets and politicians, entrepreneurs and intellectuals have come for centuries to find – or lose – themselves in ethereal beauty.

Whether it is the glamour of the Piazzetta or the breathtaking, pristine landscape, the mystery of the grottos or the splendor of the villas and gardens: Capri has myriad ways to win you over. A good place to begin your Capri adventure is the Grotta Azzurra. It is an almost metaphysical place, where the cave is illuminated as if by magic from an unseen underwater source when the sun strikes the water. Or perhaps you would prefer to sit back and relax on the terrace of the Punta Tragara Hotel, an exclusive period residence perched on one of the island’s most beautiful promontories. From here, you have the perfect vantage point to admire Capri’s signature sight: the rock formations known as the Faraglioni. These three gigantic sea stacks – the tallest of which reaches over 350 feet in height – are, if you believe Homer, boulders hurled at Ulysses by the one-eyed giant Polyphemus or, according to Virgil, the home of the seductive sirens of legend. For today’s travelers, they stand like guardians watching over the island from its southeastern tip.

Punta Tragara

The same Punta Tragara offers visitors a feast for all the senses, a riot of colors and scents along the path to town where, hidden among the lush gardens, you often find dream villas, true architectural masterpieces. On Capri, history, nature and legend await around every corner. Villa Jovis, for example, was one of the largest palace complexes of the Roman Empire, built by Emperor Tiberius to honor the father of the gods. Its sweeping views across the Bay of Naples literally take your breath away.

A stone’s throw from the Punta Carena lighthouse in Anacapri is another place where natural beauty and soul-searching intersect: Parco Filosofico is the brainchild of Swedish economist Gunnar Adler-Karlsson, a garden with quotes from famous philosophers scattered among the lush vegetation. Then there are the twists and turns of Via Krupp overlooking Marina Piccola’s bijou bay and the Faraglioni sea stacks on your way to the flowered terraces of the Augustus Gardens. Soon enough, it will be time to meander through the characteristic alleys of the medieval center and take an aperitivo on the Piazzetta, but not before you have discovered the island’s other natural wonders, from the Grotta Bianca to the Arco Naturale.
